THE FALCON MEDIA FUND
The Falcon Media Fund was established as the BG News Fund in the fall of 2005 to create a source of supplemental income to assist in the overall operations of The BG News and student development for the campus newspaper operation. More than $85,000 has been raised since its inception and has now expanded to support all facets of BG Falcon Media.
The fund has been used for student travel to national and regional conferences, such as those sponsored by the College Media Association and the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as membership dues and contest entries and travel expenses for news and sports coverage. The BG News BG Falcon Media also benefits from the fund through the purchase of equipment such as video cameras, DSLR cameras, Comrex units, mini microphones and smartphone tripods, not to mention software upgradesthrough the years.
To find out how you can make a difference through the Falcon Media Fund, contact Karl Smith, manager of BG Falcon Media, at skarl@bgsu.edu.
TERRY GOODMAN MEMORIAL JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIPS
The Terry Goodman Memorial Journalism Scholarships were endowed and the first awards presented in 2017. Sponsored by The BG News Alumni Society, the two annual awards go to two current students, supporting BGSU students who work for BG Falcon Media. Your support will help take some of the financial pressure off of today’s students and perhaps make those late nights sweating deadlines a little more fun.
Goodman was a 1978 BGSU journalism graduate and BG News sports editor who became an award-winning newspaper reporter and editor in Northeast Ohio. He died of cancer in 1996. In the 2021-22 academic year, the scholarships were $500 for an incoming freshman and $1,000 for a current staff member.
As part of The BG News’ yearlong 100th anniversary celebration in 2020-21, an alumni fund-raising effort raised $16,000 to increase the scholarship endowment to more than $50,000.
