THE BG NEWS FUND

The BG News Fund was established in the fall of 2005 to create a source of supplemental income to assist in the overall operations of The BG News and student development for the campus newspaper operation.  More than $50,000 has been raised since its inception.

The fund has been used for student travel to national and regional conferences, such as those sponsored by the College Media Association and the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as membership dues and contest entries. The BG News has also benefited from the fund by purchasing camera equipment and advertising software system upgrades through the years.

See below on ways you can give to The BG News Fund. For more information, contact Karl Smith, manager of BG Falcon Media, at skarl@bgsu.edu.

TERRY GOODMAN MEMORIAL JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIPS

The Terry Goodman Memorial Journalism Scholarships were endowed and the first awards presented in 2017. Sponsored by The BG News Alumni Society, the two annual awards — one for an incoming freshman, the other for a currently enrolled student — support BGSU students who work at The BG News. Your support will help take some of the financial pressure off of today’s BG News students and perhaps make those late nights sweating deadlines a little more fun.

Goodman was a 1978 BGSU journalism graduate and BG News sports editor who became an award-winning newspaper reporter and editor in Northeast Ohio. He died of cancer in 1996. In the 2021-22 academic year, the scholarships were $500 for an incoming freshman and $1,000 for a current staff member.

As part of The BG News’ yearlong 100th anniversary celebration in 2020-21, an alumni fund-raising effort raised $16,000 to increase the scholarship endowment to more than $50,000.

To donate to the Goodman scholarship fund, see details below. For more information, contact BG News Alumni Society member Bill Estep at 614-306-9378 or bill.estep.007@gmail.com.
