When you think about careers in media and communications, Judi Dominey’s path shows just how many directions it can take. As a BGSU graduate from 1989, Judi started out as a music major before realizing her real passion was storytelling.
“I was encouraged by my English teacher to maybe look into some sort of communications major,” she said.
She explained how that nudge led her to BG News, where she discovered she loved copy editing and managing content. She eventually became senior copy editor and was able to handle special projects in her final year.
After graduation, Judi began her career with This Week Newspaper Group before moving into technical writing at Nationwide Insurance, where she soon transitioned back to her passion for communication through internal newsletters and employee programs. Her career took off at J.P. Morgan Chase, where over the past 26 years she’s held roles from internal communications lead to marketing project manager.
“It’s been kind of a crazy ride, I know”, she said while summarizing her career journey.
She now oversees signage and branding for corporate offices and branches nationwide. She explained her role as taking complex information and turning it into clear, easy-to-follow communication. “At the very end of the day, signage is basically communication broken down into simple pieces”.
Looking back, Judi credits BGSU with giving her a foundation to succeed in so many areas. She encourages students to explore different opportunities and gain experience in a variety of roles, even if they don’t seem directly related to their major.
“Don’t be afraid to try things”, she advised, “Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone.”
