Bob Bortel, BS 1977 and MBA 1983, retired in November 2020 after nearly 40 years as director of student media at BGSU. While a student at The BG News, Bob was a page designer, reporter, production manager and 1976 summer editor. As director of student media, he also served as editorial adviser and budget administrator for The BG News, as well as several other student print and enterprise publications. In 2016, he led efforts to create BG Falcon Media and assumed administrative oversight of the newly converged student media operations, which included not only bgfalconmedia.com and The BG News but also Key magazine (formerly yearbook); The Obsidian (multi-cultural publication); and student broadcast entities WBGU-FM, the campus radio station; Falcon Radio, the digital radio station; BG 24, the broadcast news operation; and Bowling Green Radio Sports, the sports play-by-play group. Bob was awarded the 2010 Golden Touchstone Award from the Press Club of Toledo for impacting journalism in northwest Ohio over a career. In 2018, he was inducted into BGSU’s Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism Hall of Fame.
