BG Falcon Media had a big day at the annual Ohio News Media Association Awards & Fellowship Day.
For the second time in three years, BG Falcon Media earned the Frank E. Deaner Award for Excellence in Collegiate Journalism from ONMA (we finished second last year). Other entrants in our division include Ohio University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University, Kent State University and Youngstown State University.
Individual awards include:
🥇 1st place, multi-media package: Tyler Kavalecz; coverage of three BG football players being arrest
- Judge’s comments: The student journalists used print, audio and video to effectively report on all parts of a story.
🥇 1st place, newspaper design: Janessa Jewel, Mckenzie Hall, Elliot Olson (this is the third consecutive year we’ve won this top prize)
- Judge’s comments: Engaging use of artwork on the cover. The overhead shot of the parking lot for the story on parking tickets was an engaging photo and more creative than what you might usually see for such a topic. The design of the paper flows well with its use of fonts, article dividers, and photos.
🥇 1st place, headline writing: Staff; Hot Stoeve (feature on hockey goalie Christian Stoever)
- Judge’s comments: When you see a headline “Hot Stoeve!” – you may or may not have an instinct to ensure your stove is turned off. But while the paper is still hot off the presses, you keep reading! Simple, creative, and effective way to utilize the subject of the story/bit and grab the reader’s attention.
🥇 1st place, best website: Staff
- Judge’s comments: This was a complete website. i actually bookmarked it to look at it on my own in the future. Solid photos. Nice layouts. Engaging photos.
🥈 2nd place, in-depth reporting: Andrew Kish, Janessa Jewel: Ticket outrage (data-driven story on parking citations; our third consecutive year winning an award in this category)
- Judge’s comments: The student journalist identified interesting questions and a “controversy” within the campus community, and then set out to answer the questions and provide greater context based on their findings. These findings, in turn, raised additional interesting questions. This is what in-depth reporting is about!
🥉 3rd place (tie), multi-media package: Lucas Kleimeyer and Noah Seely; A Falcon, a father, a husband: Aiden Messinger’s journey to one final season
- Judge’s comments: These two articles (see below) combine quality print journalism with solid video interviews and other footage.
🥉 3rd place (tie), multi-media package: Henry Kosko; Taylor Green: The junior leader of the youngest team in the MAC
- Judge’s comments: (see above)
