Harold Brown ‘72 has been a vital part of the mentorship of some of our Falcon Media students. Brown, a retired journalist, worked for 42 years, mostly at the Sentinel Tribune in Bowling Green. He was involved in the BGNewsthroughout his time as an undergrad student, and described it as becoming his “home away from home.”
This academic year he mentored a total of three students. One this Spring semester and two last Fall. As a mentor, Brown said that he acts as a “person to bounce off of with questions or problems.”
He shared that Falcon Media Manager Karl Smith is working to gain more coverage of the city of Bowling Green and that he has been able to assist students with these stories.
He said he commonly gives students “hints and tips on people to contact if they’re having trouble getting a call back” and will occasionally share a story idea.
While mentoring students may seem like a chore to some, that’s not the case for Brown. He said that he remembers some people who acted as mentors while he was a student. He felt that he got “so much out of it”.
“I think it’s been a pretty good thing. I’ve enjoyed being able to answer questions and help out here and there.” He continues, “It’s a good way to support young people.”
Harold Brown has been able to make a lasting impact on members of the BGNews through mentoring them, just as others did to him.
