Between the retirement of a faculty member and the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been a while since Bowling Green State University played host to a regional high school journalism workshop. As of October 9, 2023, we’re back in the game.

Nearly 70 students from four area high schools came to the Michael and Sara Kuhlin Center to participate in 20 sessions as part of the Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) Region 4 Workshop. Falcon Media Manager Karl Smith joined faculty members Dr. Bailey Dick, Jason Hibbs, and Phil Beskid along with BG alum Mizell Stewart to bring to life sessions ranging from publication design, making AP Style fun, newscast basics, and audio editing. Several Falcon Media students pitched in, too, giving up one of their Fall Break days to shepherd students to sessions and lunch, as well as leading a session on sports broadcasting.

It was a great opportunity to show off the skills and talent of our faculty while showing area high school students all the opportunities with student media at BG. Without a doubt, they left with news skills and knowledge to boot. We’re already making plans to do it again next Fall.
