Karl Smith, 1987, serves as manager of Falcon Media, the umbrella organization for all student media at BGSU (including The BG News), as well as teaching as an adjunct professor for journalism courses. An award-winning newspaper writer, editor, designer and design consultant, his career includes stops in Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and New Jersey with titles including assistant sports editor, assistant city editor, assistant managing editor, managing editor, and news design director. He led Calkins Media’s Philadelphia division  through a digital transformation and product development, taking the operation from a significant loss to more than $30 million in annual revenue. He then helped launch AOL/Patch in southeastern Philadelphia, establishing a dozen hyperlocal news sites, and spearheaded content as editorial director for a start-up magazine anchored in long-form journalism. He has published two books, one about the United States Naval Academy (Anchored in Tradition) and another on his notes on traveling to China to bring home his daughter (Bringing Catie Home).
