On the heels of a total rebrand, the Falcon Media Sports Network continues to grow with members putting in long hours to create content highlighting BGSU student-athletes. Interns Claire Sant and Lena Zielke are taking advantage of all the opportunities the organization has to offer.

Claire is a junior studying journalism with a minor in advertising. She originally joined Falcon Media Sports Network to fulfill a graduation requirement of obtaining an on-campus internship. However, she said she quickly saw the opportunities available and became deeply involved in the organization. Claire grew up playing sports and was interested in learning how the media covers sports.

“Even if I’m not doing an internship, I’m still planning on being involved because there’s so many opportunities” she said.

Lena is studying advertising with a minor in media production. She volunteered with the organization before learning about internship opportunities.

Throughout this semester these interns have gained knowledge and experiences to help them succeed after graduation.

“Falcon Media is helping me tremendously. I was a nursing student who transferred to Bowling Green after realizing I wanted to follow my dreams and capture and create content for sports teams,” Lena said. “Everyone at Falcon Media has welcomed me with open arms and is willing to help explain different aspects of the field and be patient with helping me learn and grow.”

Claire points to the advantages of practical experience.

“You can take classes where you learn but once you get the hands-on experience it’s a game changer when learning the field,” she said.

When recounting their experiences, Lena and Claire mentioned valuable concepts including broadcasting, photography, interviewing skills, developing stories, and media production. No matter how small or big the story they are working on, they are using all these newly learned skills. This has helped them succeed within the Falcon Media Sports Network and create multiple student athlete features.

What advice would they offer from their Falcon Media Sports Network internship experience?

“Do not be afraid to do anything and find people who are going to help you grow and make you happy and surround yourself with them” Lena said.

“Don’t be scared to try something new and give you a glimpse of what you love to do,” Claire added.
